Perfect Hide Away

I've been driving next to this cemetary in either Waltham or Newton< I am not sure which town, for a while and one day I couldn't resist stopping by and taking a short walk through it. It occured to me that this is a perfect place to hide away from the crisis and whatever other problems one might have.

Personality

What is personality? Sometimes I hear people say about someone that he or she lacks personality. I think it is such nonsense! Personality is something that no person can ever lack. A different matter is whether one's personality is likable to someone else. But no, it's not possible not to have or to lack personality.

Cold White Glow

The snow is not a rare thing in Massachusetts, but it's usually not long lasting either. On some occasions however it stays on the trees long enough to be noticed by a flock of photographers like myself.

Winter Dusk

Having winters with snow storms is such a privilege! I remember going through a forest on a crisp frosty day. The snow squeaking under the feet, the trees shaking off some snow on your head, the birds cracking the nuts and cones, hare foot-prints forming mysterious patterns...

Holiday Snow

Home of the Holy Spirit

This is a view over the central part of the Pskov-Pechory Monastery. The yellow church on the right is built over the Holy Caves, discovered by the monks centuries ago. The caves are used as burial ground for the deceased monastery residents. The legend has it that the caves are the home for the Holy Spirit which takes care of those who passed away.

Pskov-Choodskoy Lake

The two adjacent fresh water lakes, Pskov and Choodskoy, is one of the largest fresh water bodies in Europe. The town of Pskov is located nearby in its watershed - the Velikaia River that passes through the town flows into Pskov Lake. A place of a historic and victorious battle of Alexander Nevsky, the lake is a popular place for recreation for the town dwellers.

Through a Thousand Years

As I was walking through the towers of the Izborsk Fortress I saw an airplane through an opening in one of the towers. It occurred to me that it took more than a thousand years from the time these stones were put into this tower to the time when such airplanes could be seen flying above it.

Izborsk Fortress

Izborsk Fortress has survived for over 1,500 years due to its excellent engineering, monumental construction and continual restoration. It is known as the longest held fortress on the Russian frontier (5th to 15th Century), but currently it is an critical state and is being by the region’s extreme weather cycles of rain, snow, freezing and thawing. Pechorsky Monastery

Pskov-Pechory Monastery is the oldest and some say the richest monastery in Russia. Ir is located on the Russian border with Estonia - the area of a recent conflict bewteen the two countries. The first church was built here in 1473 - the year which marks the beginning of the Monastery.

Bania with a View

The little hut on this photo is a bania - traditional Russian steam room. The uniqueness of this particular bania is in its location. Not only it provides a great view, it is also built right above a natural fresh water spring, which constantly fills a large tub inside with the freshest, cleanest, and coldest water. The usual way to enjoy this Bania is by switching short session in the hot room with the dips in the ice cold spring water.

Meaw...

This cat was incredibly patient with my little daughter. It was carried around in the most uncomfortable positions, pulled by the tail, offered various pieces of garbage to eat, and yet it never expressed its displeasure except for this irritated "meaw"... Maybe it's because the cat itself is the mother of five and it learned how to be nice to kids under any circumstances.

Lake on Gdovsky Road

This is one of the many lakes that one can find in the conifer forests of Pskov. They are popular places of spontaneous recreation among the people. This is particular lake located in a forest along the Gdovsky road is one of the best and I try to come here for a swim every time I am around.

Nikolsky Cathedral

Russia survived through an endless myriad of wars. Buildings were destroyed many times over. Often churches were the only building which were restored and preserved after each war. Now they are the oldest buildings that we still have. The Nikolsky Cathedral on this photo is over 600 years old!

Few Centuries Later

Izborsk is an ancient Russian fortress built centuries ago (it was mentioned in the chronicles as early as year 862). It used to protect the land and the people from the western invaders. It has served Russia a good service and now our kids, centuries later, still play on the land that they can proudly call theirs.

Pskova River

Pskova is the smaller of the two rivers, which cross through the town of Pskov. It flows into Velikaia River just about 300 meters down from the bridge, from which this photo was taken. The Trinity Cathedral at the heart of historic area of the town is on the left. On the right, there is a new upscale construction of the apartment residencies - a sign of the increasing wealth of the town folks.

Atlantic Shore

Mazai's Land

There's a famous Russian story about old man Mazai. It was a spring time, when the snows melted and the rivers flooded the fields and forests and the hares were saving their lives by getting at the tip of a tiny island which was about to disappear under the water. Mazai was rowing in his boat when he saw the hares - naturally he came to rescue :)
